MID WEEK HAPPENINGS (FEB 1st - 4th)

It's cold outside if you're in the Northern hemisphere and on the East Coast, so as well as some in person events, don’t forget to check out all the ways you can support the many independent theatre currently closed or operating on very limited capacity and content. Our friends in the Southern hemisphere are getting things back to normal, so make sure to get out and see some movies and support your local film houses! And with that, here's our roll out of updates for Monday through Thursday...

The COOLIDGE CORNER adds Jodorowsky’s 80s comeback movie SANTA SANGRE (1989) to it’s Virtual Screenings. An avant-garde surrealist horror tale of a young circus performer, the crime of passion that shatters his soul, and a macabre journey back to the world of his armless mother. The historic HEIGHTS THEATER in Minneapolis is back and screening a fine lineup of classic this week with Laurel & Hardy in BABES IN TOYLAND (1934) on Monday 2/1 7:30pm and THE KILLING (1956) on Thurs Feb 2/4 at 7:30pm. More info HERE.

LA’s legendary video store (50,000 titles!) and screening room VIDIOTS is currently running the new Frank Zappa documentary ZAPPA, directed by long time Vidiots patron and star of the Bill & Ted trilogy Alex Winter. More info HERE.

NYC’s FILM FORUM is still going strong with a great lineup of Virtual Screenings including New 4K Restorations of Tom Noonan’s WHAT JUST HAPPENED (1994), Ousmane Sembène's MANDABI (1968) and THE PASSIONATE THIEF (1960), as well as a stellar lineup of new arthouse releases. More info HERE.

Although the NITEHAWK in Brooklyn NYC isn’t offering virtual screenings at this time, they do have their menu available for delivery or to-go as well as merchandise and gift cards. A fantastic cinema worth supporting. More info HERE.

Also in NYC, the much loved FILM AT LINCOLN CENTER is presenting one of the most robust of all Virtual Cinema offerings. As well as the foreign movie entries for this years Oscars, catch a New 4K Restoration of Andrei Tarkovsky’s MIRROR (1974), a ravishing odyssey through the halls of time and memory, Tarkovsky’s fourth feature and perhaps most personal and evocative work traverses three generations of a poet’s family in 20th-century Russia. THE BRATTLE in Massachusetts continues their Virtual Screenings run with new independent releases and a retrospective of work from filmmaker MAYA DEREN ranging from 1943 to 1985. More info HERE. Miami’s NITEOWL DRIVE IN presents two deep dives into the fragile state of the mind with SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (1991) at 6:30pm and Hitchcock’s VERTIGO (1958). Both screening tonight Mon 2/1. More info HERE.

Brooklyn NY’s BAM CINEMATEK presents Wong Kar Wai’s lush IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE (2000) with a New 4K Restoration, along with more from the prolific Directors stunning works. Restorations were undertaken using the original 35mm camera negatives and approved by Wong Kar Wai. More info HERE.

In Australia, THE ASTOR THEATRE is operating at limited capacity but more or less as per normal with recent restorations of Indiana Jones classics. Catch RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK in 4K Tues 2/2 and Wed 2/3 and THE TEMPLE OF DOOM on Thurs 2/4. More info HERE.

The FRIDA CINEMA in Santa Ana is running a Drive In and members can enjoy THE GRADUATE (1967) this week on Thurs 2/4. More info HERE.
