CASTRO THEATRE UPDATE

San Francisco's beloved film palace presents Charlie Chaplin, Jack Nicholson, 2001 in 70mm and more over the next few weeks.

San Francisco's glorious film palace treasure The Castro Theatre presents a round of greats featuring Charlie Chaplin, Jack Nicholson, 2001 in 70mm and more;

Sunday July 9th 2:30pm & 9pm
Double Feature

MODERN TIMES (1936 / 35mm)

In Charles Chaplin’s enduring classic, the Little Tramp is bounced into the ranks of the unemployed and teams with street waif Paulette Goddard to pursue bliss and a paycheck. Their misadventures include a roller-skating night watchman, a singing waiter whose hilarious song is gibberish, a jailbird and more.

plus THE COMPLETE METROPOLIS (1927 / DCP)

For decades, crucial scenes from Fritz Lang’s dystopian epic were considered lost. But, in 2008 archivists in Buenos Aires made a spectacular discovery — a 16mm dupe negative of Metropolis containing 25 minutes of “lost” footage (about a fifth of the film) that had not been seen since its Berlin debut. That discovery led to this remarkable restoration and Metropolis can now be shown in its original complete version. Brigitte Helm, Gustav Frohlich, Alfred Abel and Rudolf Klein-Rogge star.

Wednesday July 12th 7pm
ROCKY (1976 / 4K DCP)

Written by and starring (then) struggling actor Sylvester Stallone, this underdog Oscar-winner for Best Picture tells the story of a shy, failed boxer who gets a million-to-one title shot against reigning champ Apollo Creed. Outside the ring, he takes on a romance with Adrian (Talia Shire), an introverted pet store clerk. Director John G. Avildsen (RIP) won the Oscar, expertly stretched his meager budget, skillfully capturing the slums of Philadelphia. Carl Weathers, Burt Young, a tough-as-nails Burgess Meredith and a rousing score by Bill Conti co-star.

Thursday July 13th through Sunday July 16th
Thursday / Friday 8pm
Sat / Sun 5pm & 8pm
2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (70mm Print)

Four years in its creation, Stanley Kubrick’s metaphysical science-fiction epic traces man’s history and his contact with new life. Revealing itself on an almost subliminal level, this mind-bending masterpiece is a landmark in film history. With Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood and the soothing voice of Douglas Rain.

Monday July 17th 7pm
ROSEMARY’S BABY (1968 / DCP)

Roman Polanski’s first American picture depicts the mental deterioration of a pregnant woman (Mia Farrow) as she comes to the horrifying suspicion that the child she is carrying is not of this world. Ingenious in design, the camerawork leaves the most grotesque frights to the viewer’s imagination. Ruth Gordon won the Oscar for her role as the nosy neighbor, backed by John Cassavetes and Ralph Bellamy in creepy turns.

Tuesday July 18th 7pm
REPULSION (1965 / 35mm)

Catherine Deneuve is a fragile, frigid young beauty cracking up in her London flat. As she is haunted by specters real and imagined, her insanity grows to a violent, hysterical pitch. Roman Polanski’s chilling tale of psychosis is a surreal, mind-bending odyssey into personal horror, and it remains one of cinema’s most shocking psychological thrillers.

Wednesday July 19th 7pm
Jack Nicholson Double Feature

CHINATOWN (1974 / DCP)

In 1930s Los Angeles, Jack Nicholson plays Jake Gittes, a small-time private eye who stumbles onto a big case involving graft over valuable land and water rights, murder, incest and high-level corruption. Director Roman Polanski exposed the genuine evil in Robert Towne’s intricate script and created an American masterpiece. Faye Dunaway and a deliciously devious John Huston co-star. (1974, 130 min, DCP ‘Scope)

+ THE PASSENGER (1975 / 35mm)

Jack Nicholson plays a London based journalist who exchanges identities with a man at his hotel in Africa and finds a kindred spirit in the mysterious Maria Schneider (Last Tango in Paris) as he evades his past abroad. Dazzling from first shot to last, maestro of world cinema Michaelangelo Antonionoi’s enigmatic mystery is both a haunting mood piece and a riveting philosophical journey. Jenny Runacre and Steven Berkoff co-star.

Program notes by The Castro Theatre.

San Fran's marvelous Castro Theatre has a few sensational Double Feature's in store this weekend;

SATURDAY, APRIL 29th 5pm & 9:15pm (Double Feature)
BONNIE AND CLYDE (1967, 35mm) 5:00pm

In this landmark film, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway portray the psychotic mid-west bank robbers who became unlikely heroes during the Great Depression. Both richly comic and shockingly brutal, director Arthur Penn brought his own American New Wave vision to the material and created one of the decade’s most influential films. With Estelle Parsons, Gene Hackman, Michael J. Pollard and Gene Wilder. (1967, 111 min, 35mm)

plus BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID (1969, DCP)
Paul Newman and Robert Redford star in this comically elegiac Western chronicling the mostly true exploits of the legendary outlaws' last months. George Roy Hill’s revisionist approach to the Western has its tongue firmly in cheek, aided by William Goldman’s Oscar-winning script and the undeniable chemistry between Newman and relative newcomer Redford.

SUNDAY APRIL 30th 5:05 & 8:55pm (Double Feature)
BEAT THE DEVIL (1953, 4K)
NEW 4K RESTORATION! UNSEEN, UNCENSORED VERSION!

Tough customer Humphrey Bogart is in cahoots with four misguided, deeply untrustworthy con artists off the coast of Italy, scheming to get rich off uranium deposits in Africa. Seeking to spoof the ground he paved with The Maltese Falcon, director John Huston jettisoned the source material and hired Truman Capote to write on the fly during production. Its absurd plot, offbeat comedy and deliciously deadpan performances gained the film an instant cult following. Suffering for decades in a studio-mangled version, then a shoddy public domain title, this new reconstruction utilizes the original 35mm negative and other sources to re-create the original cut, reinstating the censored scenes and eliminating the narration and baffling flashback structure. Jennifer Jones, Gina Lollobrigida, Robert Morley, Edward Underdown and Peter Lorre co-star.

THE MALTESE FALCON (1941, 35mm)
Outstanding detective drama wherein Humphrey Bogart’s iconoclastic Sam Spade and a cast of shady characters embark on a search for the titular statuette. Screenwriter John Huston made his directorial debut with this fast-paced adaptation of Dashiell Hammett’s mystery. Mary Astor, Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet co-star. (1941, 100 min, 35mm)
