CLASSIC WEEKEND HAPPENINGS ON THE BIG SCREEN

An all night Studio Ghibli party, anime classics, a screening of an almost one of a kind 35mm Print of Bad Lieutenant and much more over the course of this weekend. This is, of course, not the only repertory screenings happening this week. Check out our ‘Theatres’ page to browse through the various film houses, and also our updated 70mm listings!

Fri Feb 28th 7:30pm: Rudy Ray Moore Triple Feature at Melbourne's ASTOR THEATRE! Eddie Murphy portrayed the blaxpolitation era legend in the recent Netflix production, and this is your chance to see DOLEMITE, THE HUMAN TORNADO and THE DISCO GODFATHER back to back on the big screen.

Fri Feb 28th 8pm: At Detroit's REDFORD THEATRE, catch the evergreen classic SUNSET BOULEVARD (1950) with William Holden as a screenwriter who develops a dangerous relationship with a faded film star, the iconic Gloria Swanson, determined to make a triumphant return.

Fri Feb 28th 7pm: Round out your week of work doldrums with the three of the biggest female legends on screen (Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, and Dolly Parton) as a trio of working women taking down the “sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigots” in their workplace in '9 TO 5 (1980)' screens at The HOLLYWOOD THEATRE in Portland. Features that beloved title song.

Fri Feb 28th 9:30pm: Along with Akira, GHOST IN THE SHELL (1995) is the most influential big screen anime of all time, hypnotic in visuals and sound thanks to it's incredibly haunting score overlaying the visuals that allow the action to patiently unfold the action. Screens at The MICHIGAN THEATRE in Ann Arbor.

Sat Feb 29th 11am: The Luis Buñuel classics continue at NYC's IFC CENTER with DIARY OF A CHAMBERMAID (1964), in which a chambermaid discovers that the family she’s been hired to serve has a strange mélange of sexual and political predilections.

Sat Feb 29th 11am: David Lynch's most straightforward film (no pun intended), and a Disney release at that, is THE STRAIGHT STORY (1999), the touching true story of 74-year-old Alvin Straight, a widower and World War II veteran living in rural Iowa who, on hearing that his brother in Wisconsin is ailing, sets out to see him through the only means of transport available, his riding lawnmower. Screens at NYC's METROGRAPH CINEMA.

Sat Feb 29th 11am: Enjoy brunch and a movie at NYC's NITEHAWK CINEMA with the underrated MI VIDA LOCA (1993), a tale of an unplanned pregnancy driving a wedge between two friends against the background of early 90s gang neighborhood's in LA.

Sat Feb 29th 2:45pm:
Matinee screening of John Carpenter's DARK STAR (1974), which began as a 16mm student project for the legendary filmmaker, extra funding expanded the shoot to an additional 50 minutes, rounding out a full length feature. Screens in 35mm at New York's MUSEUM OF THE  MOVING IMAGE.

Sat Feb 29th 8:45pm: Grab your sleep attire for the STUDIO GHIBLI PYJAMA PARTY at London's PRINCE CHARLES CINEMA with six films for one ticket from the beloved animation studio including CASTLE IN THE SKY, MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO, SPIRITED AWAY and more. All in original Japanese dialogue with subtitles.

Sat Feb 29th 6:15pm: Whether a fourth trek down the rabbit hole will be warranted is yet to be determined, but we'd argue that the original was a perfect stand alone movie. Catch the game changing action fave THE MATRIX (1999) in 35mm at London's PRINCE CHARLES CINEMA.

Sun March 1st 6:15pm: Doris Day and James Stewart star in Alfred Hitchcock's tense thriller THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH (1956), screening in 35mm at London's PRINCE CHARLES CINEMA.

Sun March 1st 6pm: Another chance at the TEXAS THEATRE to catch Parasite Director Bong Joon-ho's class war allegory SNOWPIERCER (2013) on the big screen starring Chris Evans, Ed Harris and the always brilliant Tilda Swinton.

Sun March 1st 1:30pm: Classic Buster Keaton Double Feature with silent classics ONE WEEK (1920) + THE CAMERAMAN (1928) with live organ accompaniment, just like they did back in the 1920s! At Ann Arbor’s MICHIGAN THEATER.

Sun March 1st 6:30pm: A Double Feature of early 80s romantic classics with THE BLUE LAGOON (1980) starring Brooke Shields followed by SUMMER LOVERS (1982) with Peter Gallagher and Daryl Hannah. Both in 35mm at L.A's NEW BEVERLY CINEMA.

Sun March 1st 7pm: The epitome of abuse of authority, BAD LIEUTENANT (1992) sees Harvey Keitel dive into the role of an NYPD detective completely lost to drugs, sex and violence while on pursuit of a murder case. Screening at NYC's METROGRAPH CINEMA, this is an incredibly rare 35mm Print featuring a track by Schooly D that sampled Led Zeppelin. The band claimed copyright infringement and all prints had to be returned and re-struck minus the song.
