We’re back from a short summer break with a list of fab big screen outings for a broad range of classics and cult faves including a spotlight on ‘The Regan Era’, Back to the Future 2 in 70mm, and much more!
TUESDAY AUGUST 27TH
Tues 12:30pm & 4:30pm: Jean-Luc Godard's classic tale of a dystopian metropolis is visually striking and haunting. Catch ALPHAVILLE (1965) at Metrograph NYC. Also screens Wednesday and Thursday.
Tues from 2pm: Starting today, Lincoln Center NYC presents movies from 'The Regan Era' a time of America's era of greed, machoism and a changing tide for movies. Screening Tuesday RISKY BUSINESS (1983) 2pm, SUDDEN IMPACT (1983 / 35mm) 4pm, NEAR DARK (1987 / 35mm) 6:30pm and RIVER'S EDGE (1986). Season continues all week with a different line up ever day!
Tues 2:30pm, 5:30pm & 8:30pm: Wim Wenders quintessential road movie PARIS, TEXAS (1984), staring Harry Dean Stanton, screens at The Frida Cinema, Santa Ana CA. Also Screens Wednesday and Thursday.
Tues 4:20pm & 8:15pm: NYC's Film Forum continues it's season of Double Features programmed by Martin Scorsese and film critic Jay Cocks with JUDEX (1963) + CURSE OF THE DEMON (1957) both in 35mm.
Tues 6:10pm: Francis Ford Coppola's superb paranoid thriller THE CONVERSATION (1974) returns in 35mm at Prince Charles Cinema London. Gene Hackman is brilliant as the progressively unraveling surveillance expert.
Tues 8:30pm: Despite sequels, reboots and CGI efforts, the original TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES (1990) still shines with it's wonderful practical costumes. Released when the cartoon was at it's height of popularity, the movie swung back to the dark, violent roots of the original comics. Screens in 35mm at Ritz Cinema Syndey.
Tues 9:45pm: DEATH RACE 2000 (1975) is Roger Corman's completely bonkers futuristic carnage fest starring David Carradine and a pre-Rocky Sylvester Stallone. Screens at AFI Silver, Maryland.
WEDNESDAY AUGUST 28TH
Wed 7pm: It's a fantastic Double Feature of man vs machine in the heavy metal pairing of THE TERMINATOR (1984) + ROBOCOP (1987) both in 35mm at Music Box Theatre Chicago, as part of the cinema's 90th Anniversary lineup.
Wed 7:30pm: A clever Double Feature of a Hitchcock classic and Mel Brook's parody. Catch a very rare 35mm Pre Restoration Print / 1983 Re-Issue of VERTIGO (1958) + HIGH ANXIETY (1977) at San Francisco's Castro Theatre.
Wed 7:30pm: THE LAST WALTZ (1978) is the legendary farewell concert for 'The Band' Directed by Martin Scorsese's, and the one of the most essential documentaries in music cinema. Screens at The Paramount Theatre, Austin Texas.
Wed 7:30pm: Clear your throats, dust off your coconuts and get set for a special Quote Along version of MONTH PYTHON & THE HOLY GRAIL (1975) at The Loft Cinema, Arizona.
Wed 7:30pm: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: LIVING LEGEND (1978) was the big screen version of the classic TV series that featured effects from the previous years's Star Wars: A New Hope alumni John Dykstra. Screens at The Hollywood Theatre, Portland.
Wed 8:45pm: 1999 is fast becoming remembered as one of the great years for cinema, and about the last time major studios bank rolled independent style low to mid budget films. JAWBREAKER (1999) stars Rose McGowan in this black comedy of three teen socialites covering up the accidental death of their best friend. Screens in 35mm at The Prince Charles Cinema, London.
THURSDAY AUGUST 29TH
Thurs 2:30pm: Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway star in the fab heist classic THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR (1968) screening at AFI Silver, Maryland.
Thurs 7pm: The film that came to define 80s kid adventure films, with a hyperactive young cast including Sean Astin and Josh Brolin, THE GOONIES (1985) screens in 35mm The Coolidge Corner, Massachusetts.
Thurs 7pm: San Francisco's Castro Theatre is the perfect home to screen a Double Feature of gritty action classics BULLITT (1968) + DIRTY HARRY (1971), both in 35mm.
Thurs 7pm: Catch a Live Roast of THE MUMMY (1999) starring Brendan Fraser, who almost died by hanging during the making of this unexpected box office smash. Screening at The Texas Theatre in Dallas.
Thurs 7pm: Celebrate 30 years of BACK TO THE FUTURE PART II (1989), while we still wait for hover boards. The darkest in the trilogy, it is also the most frantically paced leading to some brilliant set pieces. Screening with a Rare 70mm Print! Screens at Music Box Theatre, Chicago.
Thurs 7pm: Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock keep a bus full of passengers alive through the perils of LA traffic. SPEED (1994) is still brilliant thanks to the aforementioned duo and deliciously devilish Dennis Hopper. Screens at Alamo Drafthouse NYC.
Thurs 8pm: The French Cinematheque in Paris reopens after it's summer break with Nicholas Ray's WIND ACROSS THE EVERGLADES (1958) in 35mm, starring Christopher Plummer and Burl Ives.
