MIDWEEK ROUND UP (JAN 14th - 17th)
While we were away, The New Beverly reopened (finally!) and there’s more 35mm treats in store. On the other side of the world, Melbourne’s beloved Astor Theatre is in the midst of an ongoing special highlighting the box office hits of 1982’s formidable Summer box office blockbuster royalty. We’ve also got our eye on a new Restoration of The Nun (no, not that awful one from 2018) at NY’s Film Forum, plus their ongoing 70s comedy classics season. Although not a repertory film, current Oscar favorite Roma makes our picks of the week also as it’s enjoying a limited run in 70mm. But enough from us, dive through our picks of the week and be sure to check back Friday morning for you weekend lineup and midnight movies too!

Astor Theatre, Melbourne Australia
Thurs Jan 17th 7:30pm
Khaaaaaaannnn! Or so goes that immortal line from William Shatner. The Astor continues its ‘Summer of ‘82 lineup with this entertaining sequel to the rather, ahem, uneventful original movie. More info HERE

ROMA (2018) - LIMITED 70MM RELEASE
Alamo Draftohouse NYC (Mon Jan 14th / Wed Jan 16th) and San Francisco (Mon Jan 14th)
Major Oscar buzz for Alfonso Curan’ latest, and we’re adding this one to our list because the powers that be have struck 70mm prints for this one, and we love 70mm. Although released widely on Netflix, this is your chance to see it in a much better setting. More info HERE (NYC) / HERE (SF)

LA RELIGIEUSE (THE NUN) (1966 / 4K DCP)
Film Forum, New York City
Through Thursday Jan 17th
NEW 4K RESTORATION No, not that ‘The Nun’ (the abysmal side movie in The Conjuring series). This is Jacques Rivette’s sumptuous French New Wave classic, that followed a rough ride to the screen, being turned in three times to the censors and then an eventual ban by France’s Ministry of Information. Typical… More info HERE

STRIKE COMMANDO (1987 / DIGITAL)
Loft Cinema, Tuscon AZ
Mon Jan 14th 8pm
Guns, guns, guns! Muscles, muscles, muscles! The Loft serves up more doses of bad cinema from the depths of VHS purgatory Obviously trying to rip off Rambo, Strike Commando stars Reb Brown, a budget muscles for hire that you probably found lurking on cover art at the bottom of the video store shelf. LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN (1992 / DCP)
Roxie Cinema, San Francisco CA
Penny Marshall Tribute. We lost this great Director icon recently and San Fran’s Roxie is paying tribute. This little baseball movie has become something of a cult favorite, thanks in no small amount to it’s stellar lineup of female talent. More info HERE

SCHLOCK (1973 / Digital)
Prince Charles Cinema, London UK
Wed Jan 16th 6:20pm
Director John Landis went on to much bigger and better highlights such as Gremlins, but there remains a certain charm to this story of a small town under attack from the ‘The Banana Killer’, which turns out to be the missing link between man and ape. More info HERE

THE DEFIANT ONES (1958 / 35mm Print)
MOMA, New York City
Thurs Jan 17th, 1:30pm Matinee
NYC’s MOMA is in the midst of a sensational and exhaustively comprehensive Sidney Poitier tribute, and Thursday’s matinee is a damn fine show. When a prison truck crashes on the highway, a pair of shackled convicts - a white racist (Tony Curtis) and an angry African American (Poitier) - make a run for it. The result is something of a recipe for the ‘buddy movie’ , endlessly copied for decades to come. More info HERE

FACE / OFF (1997 / DCP)
Plaza Theatre, Atlanta GA
Thurs Jan 17th, 9:30pm
Walking rage meme Nicholas Cage starred with John Travolta, hot on his post Pulp Fiction streak, in John Woo’s highly anticipated action blockbuster. Originally written for a much desired on screen pairing of Schwarzenegger and Stallone (that would come much later in The Expendables and Escape Plan), the performances here are hyper charismatic. AMADEUS: DIRECTOR’S CUT (1984 / DCP)
