MIDWEEK ROUND UP (JAN 14th - 17th)
While we were away, The New Beverly reopened (finally!) and there’s more 35mm treats in store. On the other side of the world, Melbourne’s beloved Astor Theatre is in the midst of an ongoing special highlighting the box office hits of 1982’s formidable Summer box office blockbuster royalty. We’ve also got our eye on a new Restoration of The Nun (no, not that awful one from 2018) at NY’s Film Forum, plus their ongoing 70s comedy classics season. Although not a repertory film, current Oscar favorite Roma makes our picks of the week also as it’s enjoying a limited run in 70mm. NYC’s MOMA is in the midst of a sensational and exhaustively comprehensive Sidney Poitier tribute, and Thursday’s matinee is a damn fine show. When a prison truck crashes on the highway, a pair of shackled convicts - a white racist (Tony Curtis) and an angry African American (Poitier) - make a run for it. The result is something of a recipe for the ‘buddy movie’ , endlessly copied for decades to come. More info HERE

Walking rage meme Nicholas Cage starred with John Travolta, hot on his post Pulp Fiction streak, in John Woo’s highly anticipated action blockbuster. Originally written for a much desired on screen pairing of Schwarzenegger and Stallone (that would come much later in The Expendables and Escape Plan), the performances here are hyper charismatic.
