July just kicked off and that means most of your favorite repertory film houses are revving up their line up for the month. We've singled out a few of our favorite spots for a preview of what you can catch on the big screen this month. Click the name of each cinema to check out their homepages for dates and session times;
COOLIDGE CORNER (Cambridge, Massachusetts)
Big Screen Classics series including APOCALYPSE NOW, THE LION KING and Spike Lee’s seminal classic DO THE RIGHT THING in 35mm are all coming up, also on the roster is an outdoor Double Feature of FRIDAY THE 13th Part V: A NEW BEGINNING & Part VIII: JASON TAKES MANHATTAN. Also coming up, an outdoor screening of RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. THE BEATLES: YELLOW SUBMARINE also returns later in the month. Midnight sessions take on a sinister, unhinged theme with a chilling lineup including HELTER SKELTER, PSYCHO, ZODIAC, SUMMER OF SAM and more
EGYPTIAN THEATRE (Hollywood, California) and AERO THEATRE (Santa Monica, California)
The American Cinematheque crew are rolling out a series on mazes as a thematic element with LABYRINTH, PAN’S LABYRINTH and THE SHINING at The Egyptian. The Aero will present classic American films AMERICAN GRAFFITI and THE OUTSIDERS, plus a BACK TO THE FUTURE Triple Feature. Also coming up is a western spotlight including MCCABE AND MRS. MILLER and PAT GARRETT AND BILLY THE KID. It’s but the tip of the iceberg for these venues that roll out more classics than we can handle.
CASTRO THEATRE (San Francisco, California)
San Fran’s magnificent Castro has also just released their new calendar for the month. Kubrick classics BARRY LYNDON, THE SHINING, FULL METAL JACKET and EYES WIDE SHUT play alongside the new Kubrick coco FILM WORKER. As well as THE BEATLES: YELLOW SUBMARINE, catch the raucous comedy A HARD DAY’S NIGHT. Matinee classics come in the form of 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA and Ray Harryhausen effects wizardry in JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS, plus LAWRENCE OF ARABIA and VERTIGO in 70mm.
MUSIC BOX THEATRE (Chicago, Illinois)
A series of Robin Williams will play out across every Tuesday this month with THE FISHER KING, JUMANJI, WORLD’S GREATEST DAD and a 25th Anniversary presentation of MRS. DOUBTFIRE.
PRINCE CHARLES CINEMA (London, UK)
This London institution has another stellar lineup for the month. Celebrate July 4th with TEAM AMERICA: WORLD POLICE (35mm) and JAWS. STAR TREK III will be presented in 70mm, and the Leo DiCaprio Shakespeare retooling of ROMEO & JULIET. MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO celebrates 30 years, plus get the tissues ready for a good cry during THE IRON GIANT in 35mm. A well timed FRIDAY THE 13TH MINI MARATHON of Parts 1 - 4 on the titular day, THE LITTLE MERMAID Sing-Along, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK in 70mm, PREDATOR 1 + 2 Double Feature to offset the rather ‘meh’ looking new sequel and, to be honest, way way more than we can list here. A busy month across the pond…
THE LOFT CINEMA (Tuscon, Arizona)
Meanwhile, over in Arizona… Ingmar Bergman is the subject of an extensive retrospective, comprising all new digital restorations, that kicks off early July and continues through August with SMILES OF A SUMMER NIGHT, THE SEVENTH SEAL, WILD STRAWBERRIES and much more. There’ll also be an outdioor screening of APOLLO 13 and the cult classics series continues with THE WARRIORS, MEAN GIRLS, THE SHNING and FANTASTIC PLANET. You can also catch a 35mm Print of the blaxploitation classic SHAFT in 35mm!
THE FRIDA CINEMA (Santa Ana, California)
There’s a brand spanking new calendar that’s just rolled out over at Santa Ana favorite The Frida. THE BEATLES: YELLOW SUBMARINE also makes it way out west, as well as lineup of Akira Kurosawa classics such as SEVEN SAMURAI, HIDDEN FORTRESS, YOJIMBO and THRONE OF BLOOD. Also on the lineup is mushy tear jerker THE NOTEBOOK, the Motown reworking of Wizard of Oz with THE WIZ and the new restoration of THE GREAT SILENCE. Plus much more!
MAHONING DRIVE IN (Lehighton, Pennsylvania)
This absolute GEM of a Drive In is exactly what you must visit, projecting cult classics on 35mm! This July catch a delicious horror delight with BLOOD DINER, and a hilarious Christmas in July special of ELF and A CHRISTMAS STORY. Later in the month catch a Double Feature of BILL & TED’S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE + BOGUS JOURNEY and then solid gold B&W horror / sci-fi from the 50s with I BURY THE LIVING, THE DAY THE WORLD ENDED and THE BRAIN EATERS.
MOMA (New York City)
The great Lau Kar-leung is the subject of a long overdue retrospective. One of the most prolific fight choreographers of Kung Fu cinema and eventual Director, he found a home at the legendary SHAW BROTHERS studio. He turned out ten films that have gone down as the most respected martial arts films of all time, and all are presented here including LEGENDARY WEAPONS OF CHINA, THE 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN and MARTIAL CLUB.
