GO APE AT THE ASTOR

Melbourne's art deco jewel drops a few special events for May including the decades long return of the original Planet of the Apes series, which has been out of circulation since the last existing 35mm print down under was destroyed by the local distributor (something of a habit in Australia). Whether you chose to go ape or check out some of the other greats in store, it's a good month to visit The Astor Theatre.

Sunday 21st May at 11am
GO APE:  A PLANET OF THE APES MARATHON (1968 - 1973)

Wednesday 10th May at 7:30pm (Double Feature)
BONNIE AND CLYDE (1967)
50th Anniversary

In 1934, young adults Bonnie Parker, a waitress, and Clyde Barrow, a criminal just released from prison, are immediately attracted to what the other represents for their life when they meet by chance in West Dallas, Texas. Bonnie & Clyde is often regarded as the birth of the New Hollywood movement that encompassed Taxi Driver, Godfather, etc where often dark, critical subject and anti hero characters replaced the bright, colorful musical centric era that came before it.

NATURAL BORN KILLERS (1994)
Directed by Oliver Stone from a story by Quentin Tarantino. Mickey Knox and Mallory Wilson aren't your typical lovers - after killing her abusive father, they go on a road trip where, every time they stop somewhere, they kill pretty well everyone around them. They do however leave one person alive at every shootout to tell the story and they soon become a media sensation thanks to sensationalized reporting. Told in a highly visual style that still dazzles over twenty years on.

Monday 15th May 7:30pm (Double Feature)
VNEGAR SYNDROME and XENON PICTURES presents
DOLEMITE (1971) + THE HUMAN TORNADO (1975)

Dolemite is a pimp who was set up by Willie Greene and the cops, who have planted drugs, stolen furs, and guns in his trunk and got him sentenced to 20 years in jail. One day, Queen B and a warden planned to get him out of Jail and get Willie Green and Mitchell busted for what they did to him. However, Dolemite is no stupid man and has a lot of warriors backing him, such as his call girls, who are Karate Experts--and lots more....

In the violent comedy sequel to Dolemite, stand-up comic Rudy Moore gets into trouble after he is caught sleeping with the sheriff's white wife. While on the run he encounters a madam running a house of female martial artists. They are in the midst of fighting with a local gangster.
