UPDATED: WHERE TO SEE THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY 70MM ROADSHOW OF 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY

There is truly, absolutley no other way to experience this towering milestone in cinema history. Captured in Super 65mm for a 70mm Print release, this is the way Stanley Kubrick intended 2001: A Space Odyssey to be seen. Now for it's 50th Anniversary, Warner Brothers Pictures is releasing a new completely photochemical re-issue “unrestored” 70mm print (no digital tricks, remastered effects, or revisionist edits) of the director’s groundbreaking science fiction epic, the prints were struck from new printing elements made from the original camera negative.

Headed by Christopher Nolan, who has spearheaded the industry's move back to shooting on film and he himself an adamant user of 70mm, the new print is restored using traditional techniques, and given it is completely photochemical, it allows the odd scratch or dust particles to get through, making an authentic experience. In 1999, as part of a preservation project, Warner Bros Vice President Ned Price team had his team make an “interpositive” of the film, a copy of the original camera negatives, a process that involved carefully cleaning the original negatives, removed old repairs and created new interpositives.

The result of the new 70mm prints being struck means we get true tones that were captured on the negative, and faithful reproduction of the sound elements. Many digital restorations are handled by color graders looking to simply improve overall color range or balance skin tones that will throw entire background hues out of whack. Some of the recent digital restorations of Kubrick's work have resulted in atrocious color casts ('Spartacus' in particular looks almost a sickening shade of red), and even non Kubrick films like the classic Star Wars Trilogy for the recent Blu Ray transfer were hampered by atrocious color work, sending the image to the magenta end of the color range. No such problems this time round, thanks to Mr. Nolan who may be the biggest fan of all of this monumental and consistently inspiring achievement in movie making
